American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)

The ASCII code assigns printable characters and control characters to the numbers 0 through 127. 0 through 31 and 127 are control characters, the others are printable characters. The only control characters that remain in common use today are TAB (tab), LF (line feed), CR (carriage return), and ESC (escape).

There are many extensions of the ASCII code, including various ISO/ANSI codes and Unicode.
